PHYSIOTHERAPY
If you have any of the symptoms of TMD, then physiotherapy may help relieve your symptoms and stabilise your jaw and muscles.
Please Contact Us or Book An Appointment so we can help you.
If you are physician or dental staff, please find the referral form download at the bottom of this page.
Physiotherapy is a common component of TMD therapy. Your physiotherapist may use modalities such as ultrasound, massage, exercise therapy, cryotherapy, moist heat myotherapy, and posture training. We will usually prescribe a home exercise program and teach you how to manage and reduce your pain. We will also provide education on how protect your temporomandibular joints and muscles.
Your physiotherapist may collaborate with your doctor and/or dentist to formulate a treatment plan for your TMD. In some cases, your dentist or doctor may deem it necessary to prescribe medications (i.e. anti-inflammatory and muscle relaxants) to help relax muscles, manage pain, and help reduce stress. Sometimes, local anesthetics may be injected into trigger areas of muscles. Stress reduction techniques such as bio-feedback may also be implemented as part of your treatment plan.
Once we are able to relieve your symptoms and stabilize your jaw muscles, your dentist will usually provide you with a nightguard. Rarely will crowns, orthodontics or surgery be required to treat TMD, and these, only after conservative treatment utilising splints and physiotherapy.
